DESIGN APPROACH

Layered courtyard connections

Set within a verdant acre in Alibag, the 5,000 sq ft home unfolds as an immersive retreat, where architecture dissolves into courtyards, decks, and layered greens.

Planned as a low-lying linear sprawl, it privileges horizontality, with large openings onto decks and semi-open courts, while a walled entrance courtyard shapes an inward, quiet dialogue with nature.

An earthy palette of hand-finished plaster, Kota stone, and timber roofs establishes a tactile, grounded base enriched by carved wood and cane furniture.

ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION

Sculptural roofs and vertical articulation

A series of steep, sloping roofs intersect to form a dynamic silhouette, contrasting the grounded horizontality while amplifying interior volumes up to 20 feet.

At the entrance, freestanding vertical fins fragment the courtyard walls, introducing rhythm, light, and shadow into the architectural composition.

ENTRY COURTYARD

A tactile threshold framed by earth and timber

The entrance opens into a walled courtyard with a central lawn, with corridors finished in Shahabad stone and timber posts supporting deep overhangs of the sloping roof.

A mud-plastered fuchsia wall introduces subtle vibrancy, adding warmth and contrast to the otherwise earthy, grounded material palette.

LIVING & DINING

Fluid spaces extending into landscape

The bungalow is conceived as a fluid continuum, where the living flows seamlessly into the dining area.

Both zones connect to deep, overhung shaded decks and open courtyards, extending further into a landscaped pocket courtyard that blurs the boundary between inside and out.

SPATIAL MOMENT

A cantilevered staircase shaping light and movement

A cantilevered terrazzo-finished staircase, poised beneath a sloping roof, emerges as both a functional and spatial highlight within the home.

It filters warm, dappled light into the upper level while anchoring movement and reinforcing the architecture’s connection to the landscape.

BEDROOMS

Layered privacy through corridors, decks, and courtyards

Two ground-level bedrooms are linked by a long corridor overlooking the courtyard, transforming circulation into an experiential passage connecting private spaces.

Each bedroom opens to decks or private courts, while the upper suite overlooks a 14-foot high earth mound, a deliberate intervention that redefines the otherwise flat terrain.
